Wine 101: How to Read a Wine Label

Have you ever stared at a wine label, feeling overwhelmed by the information? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Wine labels can be complex, but with a little knowledge, you can easily decipher the information and choose the perfect bottle.

Let’s start with the Appellation. This tells you where the grapes were grown. For example, ours says “Henry Ranch | Lodi.” This indicates the wine’s unique character and flavor profile based on where the grapes were grown.

Usually listed near the appellation is the Varietal. This is the type of grape used to make the wine. For example, this could read Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, or Old Vine Zinfandel.

Next, the Vintage is the year the grapes were harvested. This can influence the wine’s flavor and complexity as each growing year varies from one to the next.

Now the Producer is the winery that made the wine. This is usually the largest text on the label and can give you an idea of their style and philosophy.

On our label, look for the words “Estate Grown.” This means the wine grapes used for this wine were grown and harvested on our own vineyards. That means we have full control over how they were grown, maintained, and the quality of the grape that makes it into the bottle.

On the back label, you might find other important information like a brief description of the wine, any certifications the winery might have (like our LODI RULES seal stating our 100% sustainable growing certification). As well as the alcohol by volume and more information about the winery.

So now that you know the basics, it’s time to enjoy a glass of wine! This month, gather with friends and family, grab a bottle you’ve been wanting to taste and remember, wine is best enjoyed with those you care about.
