Harney Lane | Live Life Unhurried

Issue No. 17 | What We Carry Forward

Turning the page on my calendar to September hits a little different than other months. The start of this new month also seems to signal the transition into a new season. I feel like we have all fallen in love with fall. Maybe it’s the relief from summer heat. For us, it can be the excitement of harvest, or this year, the close of it. But more than that, maybe it’s a desire for a return to certain routines and rhythms in our lives.

Personally, I like a bit of routine in my life. While back-to-school days are long behind us and our kids are grown, our home still seems to shift this time of year. As harvest comes to an end, our morning routines return to a more predictable pattern. Sunsets come earlier and the meals start to move inside. I start lighting candles rather than picking flowers, and we begin to long for the first fire in the fireplace. I am sure you have your own patterns that shift with a new season.

For me, routines bring predictability, and I honestly love the known and the planned. But this year, I want to pause and think about my summer patterns too. Is there something that brought me joy or a bit of peace that can move forward with me into the new season? Is there something worth becoming part of my routines? Maybe it’s the cup of coffee I took outside in the cool morning air. Maybe it’s the insight a few minutes of morning journaling brought. Or it’s the freedom that leaving my phone — and watch —on the charger a little longer provided. Many of these things made my summer more enjoyable. What’s yours worth carrying from your summer into fall?
