Take Your Picnic on the Road

When we are looking for ways to change up our daily routine at home, we love finding new adventures outdoors. On the next warm day, try taking your picnic on the road for a Tailgate Tasting of your own! This can include a lot more than wine – we encourage you to fill your basket with savory and sweet treats, wines, cocktail kits and anything else you can fit in there! We like to keep things simple, but incorporate details that make the occasion extra special.

Tailgate details

Our Go-To Tailgate Tips:

The Bites

  • Go for simple finger food, arranged in a box or on a board for easy snacking.
  • At least a few cheeses that vary in flavor, texture and appearance. Some of our very favorites are Seascape, Humboldt Fog and Barely Buzzed.
  • Try two different fruits – one dried, such as apricots, and at least one fresh, like grapes, sliced apples or pears.
  • Vegetables that are also dippable: sugar snap peas, carrots and cucumbers all fit the bill.
  • Crackers, crackers and more crackers! We aim for a variety of flavor and texture, so try a mix of plain crackers, seeded crackers, and artisan fruit and nut crackers.
  • Cured, sliced meats, such as peppered salami or prosciutto – delicious and also easy to transport (and eat).
  • An assortment of fresh nuts – we love local almonds and pistachios.

The Accommodations

  • Get comfy! Whether you use camp chairs or a beach towel, layering in pillows and blankets to soften up your space will allow for complete comfort and relaxation.

The Beverages

  • Keep your wine chilled in a cooler, on ice or in a wine chiller.
  • Don’t forget the opener!
  • If you want to mix up your drink selection, our signature sangria is perfect in personal serving mason jars. Not only is it cute, but delicious to boot! Garnish with a piece of fresh fruit from your “bites” board.

The Setting

  • Park somewhere with a view – an open area, nearby park, scenic cityscape or vineyard will do.
  • Call your friends and invite them to tailgate, too. Select a spot where you can still enjoy each other’s company from a social distance.

The Entertainment

  • Turn up the tunes – have you tried our fun spotify playlist yet?
  • Always bring a deck of cards! Play some old standby games to create a little competitive fun. Gin Rummy is our fave.

The Dessert

  • Remember to finish it all off with a sweet treat. We love these… zinfandel brownies– easy to make, cut into bite-sized pieces and delicious with our Home Ranch Zinfandel.

By following these easy tips, and maybe bringing a few of your own, you are sure to create a memorable afternoon. We’d love to see your creations and tailgating escapades! Tag @harneylanewinery in your at-home tasting experiences and use the hashtag #harneyathome.
