Six Generations – Guided by Grace + Grit
Our story begins not in the cellar, but in the soil. For over a century, our family has farmed this land in Lodi, guided by equal parts grace and grit. Every bottle we make is estate-grown, shaped by place, people, and purpose. Our wines are sophisticated enough for the connoisseur, yet approachable enough for a Tuesday night dinner—made for the simple joy of slowing down, savoring the moment, and gathering with those you love. We’re proud to share this legacy, from our family to yours.
Deeply Rooted
in Family and Soil Since 1900

Since 1900, six generations of the Schnaidt-Mettler-Lerner family have tended this land with the intention of carrying something meaningful forward. Grape growers since 1906, knowledge has been passed hand to hand and season to season, with the original estate remaining in the family throughout.
Known now as the Henry Ranch, this estate vineyard was renamed to honor Henry Schnaidt, a second-generation farmer, and George Henry Mettler, a fourth-generation winegrower. Together, George and his wife, Kathy Mettler, co-founded Harney Lane Winery alongside Jorja and Kyle Lerner.
Today, Harney Lane is stewarded by the fifth and sixth generations as Kyle and Jorja lead the estate alongside their children, Kirsten and Ian.

A Century in the Making
The Harney Lane Estate was Purchased
With foresight and grit, Fred Schnaidt purchased the estate in 1900, laying the foundation for what would become Harney Lane. The original home ranch was more than a parcel of land; it marked the beginning of a legacy shaped by purpose, community, and family.

A Century in the Making
The First Vineyards Were Planted
Seven years later, Fred’s son, Henry Schnaidt, planted the first vineyards on the estate, beginning a tradition of grape growing that continues today. That same year, Lodi celebrated its agricultural roots with the Tokay Carnival—marking the region’s early identity as a place where grapes would thrive.

A Century in the Making
The Estate Garden Started to Take Shape
In 1913, Deodar cedar trees were planted by Henry and his wife, Elizabeth, forming what would become the estate garden. Towering above the property, they have stood for generations—offering shade, stillness, and a quiet place to gather beneath their canopy. Today, we’re proud to share this part of our family legacy with winery guests.

A Century in the Making
4th Generation, George Mettler, Took Over Farming
In 1963, fourth-generation winegrower George Mettler took over farming the Home Ranch. Guided by what he learned from his grandfather, Henry Schnaidt, he carried forward a deep respect for the land and a commitment to doing things the right way.

A Century in the Making
Kyle Lerner Began Farming with George
In 1995, Kyle Lerner joined George Mettler in the vineyards, beginning a partnership rooted in mentorship and shared purpose. As Jorja’s husband and George’s son-in-law, Kyle became part of a multi-generational legacy he now helps carry forward as head of vineyard management.

A Century in the Making
First Vintage Was Produced
After nearly a century of growing grapes, the family produced their first vintage of Harney Lane wines. It marked a natural evolution—from farming the land to crafting wines that reflect it. This inaugural release included Primitivo, Tempranillo, Petite Sirah, and Old Vine Zinfandel from the Lizzy James Vineyard.

The Tasting Room Doors Opened
In 2009, the tasting room opened its doors, welcoming guests to experience Harney Lane firsthand. Built through the combined efforts of three generations, it came to life during the Great Recession—a true test of the grace and grit that defines the winery.

Certified in LODI RULES Sustainable Winegrowing
In 2010, Harney Lane earned Lodi Rules Sustainable Winegrowing Certification, formalizing a long-held commitment to responsible farming. The program reflects a holistic approach—supporting soil health, water quality, biodiversity, and the people who steward the land.

Our 20th Vintage Was Produced
In 2026, Harney Lane marks its 20th vintage—a milestone that reflects both how far the family has come and the path ahead. Rooted in Lodi, it’s a continued commitment to farming, winemaking, and hospitality for generations to come.
