Harney Lane | Live Life Unhurried

Issue No. 10 | Hitting Pause Mid-Summer

The realization that harvest is coming early this year—potentially in just a couple of weeks—has me feeling like summer is suddenly fleeting. You might be feeling it, too. It’s that familiar sense that the season is slipping away before we’ve even fully settled into it.

For our local families and teachers, the routine of the school year actually begins this week. But I have to remind myself: summer is a season, not just a vacation. It hasn’t given way to autumn just yet, and there is still plenty of time to savor its joys.

When my workday finishes and a glass is poured, I love that there is still so much daylight left to be had. It gives us a golden hour—or several, really—to just linger. Kyle and I can certainly be tempted to sink into the couch and turn on the TV after dinner, but my absolute favorite evenings are the ones we intentionally spend outside. The smell of the BBQ, the taste of fresh summer produce, the warmth of a long day slowly drifting into an evening breeze.

But most importantly? It’s the undivided attention we give each other. No texts, no scrolling, no screens. Just some good background music, a beautiful view, and a quiet conversation with my favorite person. Summer seems to prompt these moments, pulling us into them if we simply let it.

I want more of that while the season allows. There is something deeply special about this time of year, whether it’s a long evening in your own backyard, gathering for takeout at the park, or sitting on your favorite restaurant patio.

This week, may we all find a few moments to linger—a sunset or two, and a good conversation that outlasts the light.
