Generational Gardens at the Home Ranch

At Harney Lane, we take great pride in our family history, especially when it comes to our farm. The property that we live and work on also houses our Tasting Room and winery facilities. We like to joke that “all the magic happens here,” but in reality, it does! There are memories of our ancestors everywhere we look – whether it’s in the vineyards or in the gardens that surround our Tasting Room.A peek into the Harney Lane forest

The front house, where our beloved Matriarch Kathy Mettler currently resides, was first built in 1911 and the first vineyards were planted on the property in 1907. According to Kathy’s daughter Jorja, “Many of the “roots” of our gardens date back to my Great Grandfather Henry Schnaidt and his wife Elizabeth’s design and hard work. When the thought of a winery became part of our dinner table conversation, we couldn’t dream of a better location than tucked back behind The Forest, which is what we’ve always called the garden area. I am sure my great grandparents could never have imagined The Forest would become host to so many special memories for so many people here at the winery.”

Harney Lane FountainWe are extremely grateful for the beautiful outdoor gardens and vineyards we’ve inherited, but perhaps even more grateful we’ve had the opportunity to share them with our patrons. There is something exciting happening on the property at any given time of year. Because we love what we do, it has been a joy to take impromptu walks into the vineyards with first time visitors, or spontaneous trips into the winery for punch downs during harvest.

As 5th generation farmers and 1st generation winemakers, we’ve done our best to honor our legacy of farming. We are proud to be Certified Green under the Lodi Rules sustainable viticulture program. Familiar guests will also notice a new “Home Ranch” designation on some of our wine labels. This is another way for us to pay tribute to our story in a more visible way, by calling out the wines that are sourced from vineyards directly around our tasting room – the Home Ranch.

We hope you enjoy the new wines as much as we do. We cannot wait until you are able to visit our Tasting Room again. When you do, be sure to stroll the gardens, walk the vineyards and savor the history in whatever way is most meaningful to you!
