Harney Lane | Live Life Unhurried

Issue No. 9 | Confessions of a Very Full Week

This past week was full—right to the very brim. It was full of catch-up work after a few days away with friends, full of family responsibilities, and full of fun, too, as we hosted our annual Team Family Swim Night.

But if I’m being honest, I’m writing this sitting at the kitchen counter, feeling tired at the end of a week where absolutely nothing went slow. My normal rhythms completely disappeared. There were no quiet mornings out in the vineyard, and certainly no early ends to the workday. It has been anything but unhurried.

So, this Sunday’s reset is really a gentle reminder to myself.

I know what those slow rhythms give me when I actually protect them: margin. They give me the space to clear my head, the space to be creative, and the space to simply plan and dream. When I skip them—like I did this week—I find myself just running from one task to the next, letting the days blur into more of the same.

It sounds counterintuitive, but I always find that my work is better when I work a little less. I am simply a better version of myself.

So this week, I’m going looking for that margin again. A few extra moments on my morning walk through the vineyard. Maybe an early end to a workday — the computer tucked away, the phone left in the other room, a chair pulled into the shade with a glass of something cold. An afternoon allowed to linger into evening under the trees. A little space to think. Maybe even time for the book that’s been waiting on the shelf.

If your week was full to the brim, too, I hope you can carve out a small space of your own in the days ahead.
