Patriarch’s Promise- A Family Legacy; A Wine with Purpose

Our Patriarch’s Promise blend has become a Harney Lane staple since the first pour at our inaugural Dinner with the Family in 2012. This proprietary blend has been the center of many conversations and guessing games, as its contents are well known to be a family secret – and we are a tight lipped group! Although we may not be ready to reveal what goes into a bottle of Patriarch’s, we want to take a moment to share the origin story that began with Harney Lane’s beloved patriarch, George Mettler, as well as announce an exciting new chapter for this unique wine. Patriarchs on patio

As a very special, limited feature on our wine list, it is always a lucky day when our Patriarch’s Promise is open for tasting. For those who have had the opportunity to sample it, you know that it is unlike any of our other wines – distinct, full-bodied and flavorful, with rich notes of anise, blackberry and spices. This wine is very near and dear to our matriarch Kathy’s heart, so we love to hear the story as she tells it…

“We have some fruit on the ranch that is considered old-fashioned. Something we haven’t used here in the winery yet. George remembered in his grandfather’s day this particular grape being used as a blending grape and he thought they made really nice wines with it. So, he started bugging Kyle and Chad to make a blend for Harney Lane using this grape. They weren’t real excited about the idea in the beginning…being the stubborn German that George was, he kept at them and, finally, Chad started working on it. Three years later, Chad came up with a blend that George thought was really worth pursuing. George was thrilled and so proud that Chad came around and decided to play with the fruit to make this fantastic wine.”

Although George was only able to indulge in our very first lot of Patriarch’s Promise, we believe that it met (and perhaps exceeded) his expectations. As a final and fitting touch, his daughter and winery co-owner Jorja deliberated over the perfect name, finally settling upon “Patriarch’s Promise” because, in her words, “he had promised that this would make and be a great wine just as he had remembered it to be.” What a tribute!

George by RandyAs many may know, we lost George to cancer in 2013. His legacy certainly lives on through his family, his farm and the winery they worked to create together. In honor of George, as well as many of our winery friends, family and community members who have been affected by this disease, it is our pleasure to announce that we will be donating 10% of sales from every bottle of Patriarch’s Promise to the American Cancer Society. We are proud to support this excellent cause and know that George’s memory will live on through each bottle of Patriarch’s enjoyed!

We feel that one of the best reviews our Patriarch’s Promise has received from lodiwine.com really says it all: “Patriarch’s Promise is a direct reflection of the man for whom home, love, laughter, family (and just below that, farming and fly fishing) loomed largest.”

Patriarch’s Promise is available to purchase in the Tasting Room (open daily 11am-5pm), online here or by giving us a call 209.365.1900. If you’d like to directly support the American Cancer Society in the fight against cancer, you can do that here. Thank you for your loyal support!

SKIRT STEAK TACOS WITH HOMEMADE MOLE SAUCE

Ingredients

skirt steak
small corn or flour tortillas
8 dried ancho chiles or a mixture of ancho and pasilla
4 cloves garlic
1 large tomato, cored and halved
2 slices bread, toasted and cubed
1 small onion, diced
1 tablespoon fresh oregano leaves (or 1 teaspoon dried)
1 pinch of cloves
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 heaping tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Directions

Marinade skirt steak for at least ½ an hour prior to cooking in your choice of marinade, season with salt and pepper.

Remove the stems, seeds and ribs from the chile peppers. Cover them with boiling water and weight them so they stay underwater. Leave to soak for 30 minutes.

In a hot, dry skillet, cook the garlic cloves and tomato for about 5 minutes, turning a couple of times.

Drain the chiles, reserving the soaking water. In a blender, combine the chiles with the garlic, tomato, bread, onion, oregano, cloves, cinnamon, black pepper, sugar, salt and cocoa power, orange juice and 1/2 cup of the chile soaking water. Purée very thoroughly, adding more liquid as necessary until you have about 3 1/2 cups.

Heat the vegetable oil in a saucepan over a medium flame. Pour in the mole, and simmer for about 30 minutes, lightly covered. The sauce should darken and become more concentrated.

While mole simmers, grill or pan sear skirt steak to desired doneness and slice thinly. Also prep any desired taco toppings; we recommend fresh avocado and sautéed mushrooms with onions.

Taste and adjust the seasonings according to your desired spice, chocolate, chili, salt and acid levels. Aim for a complex, balanced flavor. Also add a little more liquid or simmer a bit longer to get a thicker texture.

Place skirt steak in warm tacos, top with a heaping spoonful of mole sauce and toppings and enjoy!

Roasted Brussels Sprout Salad with fresh Orange, Pomegranate, Ginger & Shallots
I’ve recently discovered what has become a favored side dish in my house…..roasting Brussels sprouts and adding winter fruits like orange and pomegranate can make anybody love this seasonal vegetable!
2 Tablespoons unsalted butter
¼ cup olive oil
1 lb Brussels sprouts, halved along the stem
1 teaspoon kosher salt
¼ cup sherry vinegar
1 cup chopped shallots (about 4-6 shallots)
1 ½ teaspoons whole grain mustard
¼ bunch fresh thyme leaves removed and chopped
1 ½ teaspoons honey
*additional ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
1 cup canned garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained
1 orange, zested and flesh cut into small pieces
1 pomegranate, seeds removed and set aside
½ red onion sliced very thin
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
3 oz. feta
Method ~ pre heat the oven to 350 degrees. Toss the Brussels sprouts in olive oil and roast in preheated oven in a cast iron pan. Cook until Brussels sprouts have browned, or for about 20 minutes. Transfer sprouts to a large bowl and season with salt and pepper. In another bowl, mix salt, vinegar, shallots, mustard, thyme, honey, and olive oil. Pour mixture into the same sauté pan used to roast Brussels sprouts and bring to a simmer. Add garbanzo beans and simmer for an additional 2 minutes then remove from heat. Add orange zest & cut orange pieces, pomegranate seeds and pepper to the sprouts. Pour the warm sherry mixture over the Brussels sprouts and transfer to a serving bowl and top with feta.

Cheers!

We had a fantastic raffle with close to thirty different items ranging from “Dining around Town” basket of gift certificates to a variety of local eateries to Golf Lessons and Equipment. Our Silent Auction was amazing as well. Included were an 8’ kayak donated by Headwaters Kayak Shop,

Kyle & Morgana spa package at the beautiful Wine & Roses, some amazing tools from the Home Depot, a photography package from Leonard Photography, a Kubota tractor rental from Big Valley Tractor, a foursome of golf at Greenhorn Creek and a Dream Shopping package from merchants at Lincoln Center.

We are thrilled to announce that this year’s event generated over $12,000 for the American Cancer Society! This is a tremendous success, and a significant increase over donations from year’s prior.  A huge thanks and cheers goes out to our generous event sponsors: American Ag Credit, Big Valley Tractor, DeVencenzi Ag Pest Management, Mobile Wine Line, Inc., Bowman & Company LLC, Delta Tree Farm, Inc. and Roland Construction.

The celebration started with KMAX’s Good Day Sacramento coming out and anchor Morgan Ragan competing against Kyle on live TV! That wasn’t Kyle’s only turn in the barrel, later in the day he competed against last year’s stomping champion Rocky Suess, dear friend of our late George Mettler. Rocky, again, beat Kyle!
