Rain in the Vineyard- a wet winter means what for our wines?

Although it is practically summer, we are still hearing the same great questions in the Tasting Room just about daily- What does all the rain we’ve had mean for our vines?

Thankfully, we have our Proprietor and Vineyard Manager Kyle Lerner on hand to provide some insight into what to expect for the coming year and your 2017 vintages!

What has been the impact of all the rain this year?

wet lot 2017

In our business, rain is always a good thing. We’ve experienced less than average rainfall the past few years, which has had a negative impact on the vineyards and caused the vines to be very stressed. It’s kind of like running a marathon and missing some water stations along the way. We’ve had to help them with additional irrigation to allow more moisture reach the roots. In contrast, this year has been great because it’s kind of a catch-up year. We average about 12 inches of rain a year and in most areas of the Lodi appellation and we are at around 30 inches this year. We now have full soils that are saturated!

What do the vines do with all the rain? How does this change your approach?

Moisture can push very deep through the root zone so that the roots can reach and receive nutrients. The stress has been taken off of them and right now they are in party mode. On the farming side, it may present its own challenges; the vines are extremely happy and have a full moisture profile, so they are going to come out very fast and robust. We’ll approach our farming strategy differently in order to burn off some of that energy and maintain vine balance. Techniques like shoot-thinning, cluster-thinning and leaf pulling may be slightly delayed so that we can allow the vine to use up some of that energy and slow down growth sooner. Basically, our farming practices have been flip flopped somewhat to accomplish the same thing – healthy, happy vines producing at a steady pace.

With the influx of so much rain this season, what is happening in Lodi’s vineyards?

Harney Lane is very fortunate to be faring well, thanks to our location. Some vineyards that reside along the Mokelumne River have been under water for quite some time, due to the outflows of the Comanche River. These may continue to sit under water over the next couple of months. We are located a few miles south of the river, with very sandy soils that allow water to penetrate well. Consequently, we expect a fantastic season and wines coming in 2017.

Albarino- not just a summertime sipper

Generally referred to as our go-to warm weather wine (I mean, what’s better than a chilled glass of Albarino while basking poolside? Think scintillating flavors of bright lime, lemon curd and peach blossoms), our Albarino is making a case as an enjoyable wintertime wine as well! In the midst of winter (welcome, we’ve missed you!), we don’t typically grab for the Albarino…however, recently we revisited our current 2014 vintage and noticed that it has evolved beautifully! With some time in the bottle (bottled in March of 2015, released in May of 2015), this wine has softened up with a rounder mouth feel and finish, while maintaining great acidity. All we can ... With some time in the bottle (bottled in March of 2015, released in May of 2015), this wine has softened up with a rounder mouth feel and finish, while maintaining great acidity. All we can think about is seafood!

Enter Crab Feed season…this Albarino has the acidity needed to pair beautifully with the sweetness fresh crab offers and as a bonus it’s able to cut through the richness of the undeniable melted butter served up alongside the crab. The minerality that Albarino is oftentimes known for matches nicely with the briny notes in crab.

If you happen to be supporting one of the many Crab Feeds happening this time of year, might we suggest you grab a bottle or two of 2014 Harney Lane Albarino to share at your table and see what everyone thinks! Courtney & Kris had great reviews from their friends!

We got our STOMP on!

We STOMPed out Cancer last Sunday, October 4th. For the 5th year in a row, our family, staff and The Greyhounds Relay for Life Team worked tirelessly to put together a great day of fundraising, wine, food and grape stomping goodness for all to enjoy! Approximately 100 people jumped into the barrels and STOMPed throughout the day. Our friends Snap Jackson and the Knock on Wood Players kept the energy up with their bluegrassy feel-good tunes. Our raffle, the biggest yet, was full of amazing gifts donated by our friends, business partners and generous community members! There were massages, oil changes, jewelry, gift certificates to top restaurants, wine gift baskets, golf lessons, and so much more. The Silent Auction was also pretty remarkable. A spa gift package to the beautiful Wine & Roses Hotel.Restaurant.Spa as well as a case of our very first vintage 2006 Petite Sirah were the hits!

For the second year in a row, we are happy to announce that the event generated over $12,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Thank you to our very generous event sponsors and supporters alike! Please pass along the support and visit these businesses.

Winemaking 101- a recap of the latest in our Winemaker’s Series

Winemaking 101, the third installment of our Winemaker’s Series was full of great information. Winemaker Chad Joseph took guests from our lovely Albarino vineyard through the Crush Pad and into our production facility, on an in-depth journey of just what we do at Harney Lane to process grapes and craft our wines. Guests were treated to chilled 2014 Albarino in the beautiful vineyard where Kyle discussed how we have grafted this varietal onto chardonnay vines. The story goes… our matriarch, Kathy has always been a big fan of Albarino (her cat is even named ‘Albi’!), and convinced the family to try making our own. It took off and we now have ... The story goes… our matriarch, Kathy has always been a big fan of Albarino (her cat is even named ‘Albi’!), and convinced the family to try making our own. It took off and we now have numerous acres dedicated to it! If you are at the tasting room and would like to take a peak at the grafted vineyard, ask our staff where this is.

The Winemaking 101 journey continued onto the Crush Pad, where Chad showed off our production area, press, macro bins and our state of the art tanks where our 2014 Chardonnay was chilling in its cold jacket. Guests enjoyed samples straight from the tank.

At the tanks

Next up was a sample of our 2007 Dry Rose out of the Library. Chad discussed the way in which we make our rose- where we bleed our grapes (saignee), barrel ferment and age on light lees in oak. The braver in the crowd, even poured lees into their hands for a more sensory experience.

Cabernet barrel samples

Next was a very exciting station- our red winemaking discussion and barrel sample of our brand new varietal Cabernet Sauvignon!!! This is a first for Harney Lane and was a great perk for attendees. Chad and Kyle showed off our sorting table, discussed punch downs, pump overs, settling, racking and so much more.

Sorting and Destemming

Finally, guests were led through our picturesque forest for a treat of our port-style Lizzy James Old Vine Zinfandel Dessert Wine paired with a wonderful dark chocolate truffle!

Chad created a handy Glossary of Winemaking Terms that we hope you can learn from! Knowledge is power and there is always something to learn. I need to do some studying!
